Looking to start an online business?

By Denise Taylor

During our present economic uncertainty, millions of Americans are now taking a closer look at the possibility of ditching their J.O.B.'s (just over broke) in favor of starting their own online business. The home based business industry is booming however, searching for a work at home / home based business opportunity can be a overwhelming task to say the very least. A Google search for the term "home based business" returns over 516 million results!

When searching for an online business opportunity, you have to be diligent...and willing to question the legitimacy of an operation. Don't be afraid to check and double check. One of the first things you should always look for when visiting the website of a business opportunity is their contact information. Just as you wouldn't invest in a company that didn't provide any contact information, in the real world, so why do it online? But countless people do each day and as a result, get taken for a ride.

You want to make absolutely sure you can get in touch with a real person. So, look around the website for a phone number, address, fax number anything. If you find the phone number...pick up the phone and contact someone. One of the things you should ask when you speak to them is if you can get in touch with others in your area, who are with the company. Be suspicious if the company refuses or gives you the run around.

If there's only an email address...email the business owner, allow 2 days for a reply. Most legitimate online business opportunities usually will reply to your inquiry within 24 to 48 hours. They also tend to leave a message on their website if they are performing updates, or having technical problems with their website. If you haven't heard anything after 4 days...it is my opinion you should move on.

Be wary of companies that say "anyone can do this" or are vague in their explanation of the business opportunity. Anything that looks too good to be true should be questioned. Real legitimate work at home / home based businesses offer full transparency and do not exaggerate their claims.

If you apply the same mind set you would when looking for a traditional offline (real world) business you can bypass many of the scams out there, and find an opportunity that just may change your life for the better.
